Silva praises Everton loanee Virginia after Sporting move
Marco Silva has praised Everton loanee, Joao Virginia, following his move to Sporting CP.
What’s the story?
The youngster completed a season-long loan deal to the Primeira Liga outfit on Tuesday. It includes the option of a permanent move to Lisbon for the 21-year-old shot-stopper.
Virginia made some first-team appearances for the Blues last season, appearing three times. However, the arrival of Asmir Begovic closed the door to any further opportunities.
It brings to an end his time with Everton, where he joined in 2018, the same summer Silva joined the side.
Speaking to A Bola, the former Blues boss was extremely complimentary about the young ace. The current Fulham manager claimed the move is an important step in the figure’s career.
When talking about Virginia, Silva said: “João is a young goalkeeper who, during my time at Everton, showed maturity and a lot of work capacity from the first day he arrived.”
“He was always with us on a daily basis, working with the main team. It grew a lot during this period and the evolution was notorious. And that happened, above all, because he is a professional, a goalkeeper who likes to listen, learn and work.”
Virginia could be a massive loss for Everton amid Silva comments
Virginia could be a massive loss for Everton amid the praise from Silva.
Signing a new goalkeeper has proven harder than it seems as shown by a lot of Everton’s rivals.
Arsenal are the prime example of this.
Having sold Emiliano Martinez, the Gunners have struggled to replace the Argentine.
So, it begs the question, why sanction the departure of a promising youngster who can be the number two?
You feel as though signing Begovic only hampered the progress of Virginia. His performances last season showed he’s ready to be competing in the first-team squad.
Everton could have missed out on a very good player, especially if Silva’s comments are anything to go by.
