Sigurdsson’s Cardiff double saw him break a Premier League goals record

Everton got the comprehensive win they needed to get back on track and prepare for Sunday’s Merseyside derby when they travelled to Cardiff last night.

The 3-0 victory was the perfect way to return after an extended break and Marco Silva was in desperate need of the respite such a comfortable night’s work afforded him.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin rounded off the scoring but before that it was Gylfi Sigurdsson who put the visitors in charge with a goal in each half.

And while the fact those goals got the win for Everton was the most important factor, they also secured a Premier League record for Sigurdsson.

The strikes meant that Sigurdsson moved clear as the highest scoring Icelander in the history of the Premier League, surpassing former Chelsea and Bolton striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.

That Sigurdsson surpassed the tally of a striker from his attacking midfield position is testament for his enduring goal threat from his time at Swansea, Tottenham and Everton.

Speaking about the record, Sigurdsson told the Independent: “I knew about it, I’d been waiting to get that. I’m very proud. When I was growing up [Gudjohnsen] was the one I was watching.

“I wanted to be like him and play in the Premier League. Hopefully he’ll give me a text. It’s fantastic to have finally gone over him.”
