Sigurdsson is one penalty miss away from setting an unwanted Premier League record

Everton’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon felt like the statement victory Marco Silva needed to get his Goodison Park tenure off the ground.

The performance was not perfect, especially in the first half, but there was a passion and intensity in the second half that showed where Silva could take this Toffees side, given time.

It was Gylfi Sigurdsson who made the game safe with 18 minutes remaining, converting the rebound after his penalty was saved by Kepa.

But that penalty miss took Sigurdsson onto three spot-kick failures for the season, after misses against Watford and Fulham so far this term.

The likes of Alan Shearer, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Teddy Sheringham have all missed three in a campaign before, but no top flight player has flunked it from the spot four times.

With eight games remaining, Sigurdsson, who earns £100,000 per week according to Spotrac, is dangerously close to setting an unwanted Premier League record.

The former Spurs man has slotted home this term against Burnley and Manchester United, but a success rate of just 40 per cent may convince Silva to take him off penalties soon.

But if he doesn’t the Icelander will be keen to avoid setting a new bar in terms of poor penalty prowess.
