Reported Liverpool target Kai Havertz has been compared to Zinedine Zidane by his assistant coach at Bayer Leverkusen, Marcel Daum, in conversation with talkSPORT.

The 20-year-old has been sensational for Leverkusen over the past few years, clocking up a gargantuan 143 senior appearances in all competitions already despite his young age.

Havertz has also claimed 43 goals and 30 assists for his side, and has already won seven caps for Germany, so it’s little surprise that he is being linked with some of Europe’s top clubs.

As well as Liverpool, the likes of Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are all said to be keen on the Leverkusen ace, according to Goal.com.

“Everyone is asking about Kai Havertz,” Daum told talkSPORT. “If you see him play, it tells you everything.

“For me, he has the elegance of Zidane. If you see his movement, he’s very elegant, he’s always calm, he has great passing ability. What a lot of people don’t see, because we watch him every day, is that he’s pretty fast. That’s a big bonus.

“He’s a great player; he’s scoring goals, he’s great in the air and he’s pretty fast. It’s up to him how far he can go. I can’t say he will be the best German player ever, but he has the talent and there are no limits. He’s displaying signs of Zidane.”

Havertz now has 15 goals and eight assists from 38 appearances in all competitions last season, while his last 12 games in all competitions have yielded 10 goals and six assists.

Pundits and peers alike are running out of superlatives to send Havertz’s way, and given his heroics on the pitch, it’s no surprise to see the top European clubs all linked with him.

From Lionel Messi saying “his composure in front of goal is so impressive for such a young player” to Owen Hargreaves describing him as an “absolute diamond”, “the real deal”  and “everything”, we’re talking about a player of the highest calibre here.

He won’t come cheap though – even though the global health crisis could perhaps lead to a “big crunch” in the football industry, including in wages and transfer fees, there may not be such concessions for the £90million-rated prodigy, given what a top asset he is.
