Si Ferry urges Celtic to consider Paolo Di Canio, as pressure on Neil Lennon mounts

Simon Ferry has told Open Goal that Celtic need to consider a move for Paolo Di Canio having worked under the Italian during his time at Swindon Town – amid mounting pressure on current Hoops manager Neil Lennon.

Sunday’s defeat to Ross County has piled the pressure on Lennon. It was Celtic’s first defeat in domestic cup competitions for four years, and has worsened a run that has seen Celtic win just two of their last 10 games – losing their last four home games.

Many have come out in defence of Lennon, with pundits blaming the board or the players. Some, though, feel he is unable to recover from the position he is currently in – following protests from fans and a banner from the Green Brigade.

Ex-Celtic midfielder Ferry – who has gained a big following as host of YouTube channel Open Goal – thinks the Hoops should consider a move for Di Canio, who played 37 times for Celtic and scored 15 goals during the 1996-97 season.

“One guy who I know would be a good short term fix would be Di Canio,” Ferry said. “Not long term, but a short term fix. He would love it. See all the pressure it would not bother him. I think that is what this team need.

“See the mistakes, he would have you on the training ground for five hours until it was better. He would not leave Lennoxtown until it was how he wanted it. Ntcham jogging back for that third goal in Europe – he would be pinned up against a wall.”

TBR’s view – So, would Di Canio be a good fix for Celtic?

Di Canio has the ex-Celtic past that many feel is crucial when taking the role, allowing him to connect with supporters. During his time at Swindon and Sunderland, his tactics and passion were evident – though his role at Sunderland was always doomed.

The Black Cats were on the way down for some time and Di Canio could not stop that. He has failed to manage since, remaining out of the game for seven years. He was linked with Celtic and has since applied at Bolton and Rotherham.

Out of the game for so long, Di Canio would have to get up to speed quickly in a side that have no time to spare. But certainly, his appointment would excite fans and players like – and could be ideal for a quick fix.
