Matthew Pennington has bagged himself a transfer immediately after his release from Everton – and some Shrewsbury Town fans on Twitter are excited by the signing.

English Football League club Shrewsbury, who play in League One, took the 26-year-old on loan during the second half of this season.

The defender has now returned to Shrewsbury permanently by signing a two-year deal (official website).

After 15 years on the books at Everton, Pennington has finally completed a permanent move away from Goodison Park after the Merseyside club opted not to extend his contract.

He played nine first-team Everton games after coming through the academy, but has spent the last few years out on various different loan spells.

He’s finally found a permanent home to play his football.

The centre-back impressed during his 20 games in a Shrewsbury shirt in 2021, which is why a selection of their fans are thrilled to see him return.

Matthew Pennington transfer should be the first of Everton clearout

Aged 26, it seems crazy that Pennington has been on the club’s books for so long when any chance of a first-team breakthrough seemed to disappear years ago.

Beni Baningime and Callum Connolly are two more Everton-owned players that fall into the same category.

It should be a busy summer for Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti when it comes to deciding the fate of players in his large squad.
