Lucas Torreira only played in the first half of yesterday’s 1-0 win over Watford but he made a significant impact.
The Uruguay international was involved in an 11th-minute incident involving Troy Deeney which saw the Watford skipper receive a straight red card.
Deeney was adjudged to have elbowed Torreira in the side of the face after the Arsenal midfielder released the ball.
This incident happened just one minute after Arsenal had taken the lead as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang forced a howler from Ben Foster.
The Gunners then saw the rest of the game through, albeit unconvincingly, to claim a 1-0 win thanks to Aubameyang’s fortuitous goal.
Torreira was withdrawn at half-time and Unai Emery admitted that booing from the Watford fans played a part in this substitution.
Emery told the club’s official website: “First I decided to do the change of Lucas Torreira because, after the red card, the atmosphere is against him.
“Also, the doctor said to me in the first half that he has a little pain from Thursday’s game against Napoli and I decided ‘okay, it’s the moment’.”
But the 23-year-old had already made a game-changing impact by then. Here are some things Arsenal fans said about Torreira’s performance.
