Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Fabrizio Romano revealed that Donyell Malen is close to joining Borussia Dortmund.

What’s the story?

Well, the Italian journalist believes Borussia Dortmund have agreed a €30m (£25.7m) deal with PSV Eindhoven for the Dutchman’s services.

It was said that Liverpool were also in talks to sign the 22-year-old, although those discussions now look to have been for nothing.

Malen scored 27 goals in 45 games last season, while also providing ten assists in the Netherlands.

In that respect, it’s no surprise to see Borussia Dortmund spend so heavily on his services.

Should Liverpool have matched Borussia Dortmund’s bid?

In our view, for £25.7m, Liverpool should’ve got involved.

Malen is just 22, and already has plenty of Champions League experience and also 13 caps for the Netherlands.

Tactically versatile, quick and direct with excellent movement, he seems tailor made for Jürgen Klopp’s system.

At just 22, it would also be interesting to see how good he’d become under Klopp, a man known for developing forwards such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Robert Lewandowski into elite attackers.

For now, the Reds will have to look elsewhere.

They must, however, bring at least one new forward to Anfield.

Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are not good enough to match the level of Salah, Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota when they have to step up.

Klopp desperately needs at least one new star up top.

Let’s see how the Liverpool fans reacted after hearing about Malen’s imminent move to Borussia Dortmund…
