Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso came on as a substitute in Argentina’s 2-0 loss to Uruguay in World Cup qualifying.

The reigning world champions fell to their first defeat following their triumph in Qatar just under a year ago.

Lo Celso came on in the 80th minute of the match and, though the Tottenham player didn’t have much time to make an impact, he wasn’t anonymous.

Several Argentina media outlets didn’t give the Spurs man a rating due to how little time he spent on the pitch, but still had kind things to say about him.

For instance, LPM wrote: “He was once Lionel Messi’s best partner and today he tried to return to those times. At times he achieved it, but he was not decisive in the game.”

Meanwhile, Pagina12 wrote: “He showed some nice movement, typical of his quality. Maybe he should have come on earlier.”

And TyC Sports wrote: “He took control the few minutes he was on the field.”

Lo Celso now has superb opportunity to stake Tottenham claim

It’s good to hear that Lo Celso did fairly well – and earned praise – when called upon in a game where few of their players emerged with much credit.

The 27-year-old is clearly an important player for Argentina and it’s good to see. Now, let’s hope he can establish himself at Tottenham.

Lo Celso hasn’t had a great time while on Spurs’ books so far. However, Ange Postecoglou has given him a chance to carve out a place for himself.

Sadly, a hamstring injury stopped him in his tracks and now he’s having to make up for lost time in a squad with a lot of competition.

With James Maddison now on the sidelines, Lo Celso has the perfect opportunity to rise up to the occasion and become crucial for Postecoglou.
