Should West Ham bite the bullet and sell Dimitri Payet this January?

One of the headlines of the week came from London, where West Ham manager Slaven Bilic confirmed that star man Dimitri Payet is considering an exit from the club and has demanded a move, saying he no longer wants to play for the club. Bilic said:

“We have said we don’t want to sell our best players but Payet does not want to play for us; he wants to leave. He’s definitely our best player and that’s why we gave him a long contract. We are not going to sell him. This team, the staff – we gave him everything, we were always there for him. I feel let down. I feel angry. I spoke to the chairman and this is not a money issue. We gave him a long contract because we want him to stay. We aren’t going to sell him, not whatsoever. It’s not a money issue or anything. We want to keep our best players.”

Bilic has decided that Payet will not train or play for the first team again until he withdraws his desire to leave, but the club clearly have no intention to sell him either, leaving the Euro 2016 star in a confusing situation. With the January transfer window reaching its halfway point, if he is to depart the London Stadium then a move must progress quickly.

The Frenchman was reportedly subject to a £19 million bid from Marseille, with other rumours indicating that Chellsea may be among the sides to be monitoring the situation and seeking to add him to their squad, though it’s understood that the 29-year-old would prefer a return to France.
