There was a surprise in the transfer rumour mill as usually reliable French outlet RMC Sport claimed that Tottenham had registered an interest in Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, even going so far as to say that the Lilywhites have had an offer rejected.
Would Tottenham want him?
Martial would fit in with the Tottenham transfer policy well. Young, with bags of potential to improve, he would thrive under the management of Mauricio Pochettino who has shown that he can develop players and take them to the next level in his career.
Proven in the Premier League too, Martial may be more expensive but his track record may be more appealing than taking a gamble on an unproven talent from abroad. Pochettino could rest assured that he would be bringing in a player who would immediately be able to add goals to his side.
However, his wages and transfer fee would not come cheap and that is unlikely to appeal to Daniel Levy. They may not have even dipped into the market yet this summer, but it seems unlikely that they would smash their transfer records to do so.
Would Manchester United let him go?
It seems unlikely that Jose Mourinho or Manchester United would be prepared to let Martial leave. He remains a key option for the club and is a valuable asset off the bench, even if he has struggled for a first team place under Mourinho.
If they were to even consider his sale, they would likely demand a huge fee. Having paid £36 million up-front with the potential to rise to £57.6 million, they would at least want to recoup their money.
With that in mind, it is important to remember the wishes of the player. Journalist Tancredi Palmeri claimed that Martial rejected an offer from Inter Milan this summer and is determined to remain in the Premier League. As such, United may have little choice but to consider selling to one of their rivals if they are considering cashing in on him.
