Leonardo Bonucci
Playing with Conte already makes this link an easy one for the mainstream press, and it is one I think Chelsea should seriously pursue, whether Chelsea play three at the back or four.
Bonucci has been solid so far for Italy in the Euros after years of solidity in Serie A for the dominant Juventus side. He looks comfortable on the ball, playing out from the back as well as being a solid, no-nonsense defender – qualities that still work so well in the English game.
To highlight his abilities on the ball, you only have to look at his assist for Giaccherini in Italy’s 2-0 win over Belgium – a 35-yard pass, perfectly over the defensive line straight onto his foot. I am sure Chelsea fans could get used to seeing that on a regular basis.
At 29, Bonucci is probably in his peak as a defender and would come in to replace the experience and knowledge John Terry brings when he plays. Sadly, Terry probably won’t play as much as he has done in the past, Chelsea need another centre-back with experience and class in abundance. Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma are quality defenders, but maybe lack the experience that others have, opening the door for many appearances for Bonucci in a Chelsea shirt.
