Joe Allen (CDM)
Part of the ‘Big 3’ alongside Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, Allen is the third member of the Welsh squad who has played at the highest level with appearances in the Champions League for Liverpool. Having finished the season in fine form for the Reds, Allen will head to France full of confidence, something that can only be good for Wales’ prospects.
The diminutive midfielder’s passing range is well known and this could be key to Wales’ success as they look to hit teams on the break.
None of the Welsh players should need any extra motivation this summer, but with international tournaments always providing a ‘shop window’ for players, Allen may see the Euros as a perfect opportunity to impress potential suitors with his Liverpool future appearing uncertain.
Andy King (CDM)
Another big decision facing Coleman is his second central defensive midfielder. Confidence is a huge thing for footballers and football teams, and nobody will have more heading in the European Championships than Leicester’s Andy King. Despite being primarily used as a substitute this year, King still made 25 appearances in the Premier League and was an integral squad member as the Foxes defied all the odds to claim the Premier League title.
If he can continue with that form and confidence in France, it’s sure to rub off on his Wales teammates.
While Joe Ledley was above King in the pecking order during qualification and looks like making a miraculous recovery from a broken leg in time for the tournament, he certainly won’t be match fit. Starting the Crystal Palace man is certainly a risk Wales don’t need to take, particularly when they have a Premier League winner in their ranks.
Aaron Ramsey (CAM)
The only potential debate around Wales’ second World Class player is the exact position he should play. However, as the creative spark for the team, he needs to be as close to Gareth Bale and the opposition goal as possible, not primarily focussed on defending.
Coleman recognised this in qualifying with Ramsey scoring 2 goals and making numerous runs into the opposition area. Ramsey’s form and link-up play with Bale could determine Wales’ fortunes at the tournament.
