Should recalling Nelson be Arsenal’s answer to Welbeck injury?

Unai Emery will be pondering his options ahead of the January transfer window.

The Arsenal manager needs to find a way of replacing Danny Welbeck, who is likely to miss the season with a serious injury.

Welbeck was never a first-choice option at Arsenal but the sporadic England international’s ability to play out wide or up front made him a useful player to have on the bench.

Without Welbeck, Arsenal lack depth and they will be light in that department if Alexandre Lacazette or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suffers an injury.

Emery needs to decide whether to sign a new player in January or promote a youngster to fill Welbeck’s void.

The 18-year-old has scored six goals in just nine Bundesliga games for Hoffenheim and he only has four starts to his name.

This makes Nelson the perfect impact substitute that Arsenal are searching for.

If Emery recalled Nelson in January, he could provide cover up front and out wide for the rest of the season.

But the flip side of the argument is that Nelson is thriving out in Germany.

Leaving the England under-21 international at Hoffenheim for the season could benefit his long-term development.

And he could return to Arsenal next summer ready to take over from Welbeck, who will be a free agent by then.
