Should Rangers fans fear 29-year-old’s arrival after flopping south of the border?

Rangers have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Greg Stewart on a free transfer from Birmingham City. As reported by the Daily Record, the attacker has signed a three-year deal with the Ibrox club ahead of his contract expiring with the Championship club in the summer.

Stewart had an excellent first half of the current campaign. The forward scored eight goals in 16 games on loan at Kilmarnock. However, he has struggled back on loan at Aberdeen since January.

But that should not worry Rangers fans as much as his struggles at Birmingham.

Signed for a reported £400,000 (Daily Record) from Dundee in 2016 the Scottish playmaker failed to make any impact in English football.

He played 22 games for the Blues, failing to score in that time before his loan spells back north of the border began.

Steven Gerrard has recently helped Rangers bring in the likes of Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe, players who have thrived in the English game. The level of players at Ibrox should be that of those who would thrive in the Championship and Premier League, not flop.

Hopefully, the omens are wrong and Stewart can be a massive hit for Rangers. However, when it comes to toppling their Glasgow rivals Celtic this seems like a fairly tame acquisition.
