Since last season, Rangers have needed to bring in a number 10 to string the midfield and attack together. At times, Scott Arfield has been viewed as that man, but this season his form is yet to match last season’s level – and he has been playing wide.
Joe Aribo has been signed, but the Nigeria international is more of a central midfielder and is certainly a work in progress at 23 years of age. Ryan Kent has been used as a playmaker, but he is naturally best from the left flank.
Steven Gerrard will know the importance of a creative midfielder from his time as a player, regularly playing in behind the striker and scoring goal after goal from midfield – to ease the pressure on his strikers.
Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe are bang in form but as soon as the confidence drops for either striker, the goals may dry up and a goalscoring number 10 is just what Rangers are lacking in their bid to topple Celtic.

A free agent should be considered and Gerrard should look no further than 33-year-old star Yoann Gourcuff, who is on the lookout for a new side after being released by Ligue 1 side Dijon at the end of last season.
Gourcuff, who has played 32 times for France, is renowned for his ability to score and create from midfield. In 95 appearances for Bordeaux, Gourcuff scored 24 goals and laid on a further 27 assists.
A classy player, Gourcuff is not blessed with speed, but is renowned for his intelligence on the ball and in between the lines. He can see a pass that many cannot, and is more than adept at shooting from long range.
On a free transfer, the former Lyon and AC Milan star would be an unbelievable signing – if a little ambitious. Landing Gourcuff would give Rangers all the tools required to finally end Celtic’s pursuit of eight titles in a row.
