Newcastle United are in the market for a new centre-half.
The Magpies recently allowed Florian Lejeune to join Deportivo Alaves on loan, and Fabian Schar has been working his way back to fitness after dislocating his shoulder in July.
A couple of weeks ago the club appeared set to sign Rob Holding on loan from Arsenal, but the Englishman looks set to stay at the Emirates now.
There has also been some talk about Calum Chambers possibly heading to St. James’ Park.
But a new opportunity has seemingly arisen for Newcastle which may be worth exploring.
Antonio Rudiger of Chelsea was surprisingly left out altogether against Liverpool on Sunday, despite being fit to play.
Sky Sports have reported the Germany international is now considering his future at Stamford Bridge, and maybe Newcastle should test the waters with a loan approach.
TBR’s View – Rudiger could do well at St. James’
Rudiger did not have a good season in 2019/20, but few of Chelsea’s did in what was a leaky first campaign under Frank Lampard.
In the past though, Rudiger has shown he can be a highly capable centre-half.
Newcastle tend to be quiet solid at the back and Rudiger may well have a new lease of life under Steve Bruce.
The 27-year-old would also bring those ball-playing qualities, which would be an added bonus.
How willing Chelsea would be to let their £100,000-a-week player (Spotrac) leave on loan – with wages to be split – is presently unclear, but the Magpies should definitely do some digging.
