Newcastle United have made a strong start to life under manager Steve Bruce and find themselves ninth in the Premier League table as it stands l
They are currently 10 points above the relegation spots and are perhaps looking up rather than over their shoulder.
But there is definitely room for improvement in the squad at St James’ Park and Bruce has shown he can get plenty out of his players.
The Magpies defence is excellent and there is top-flight quality running throughout it, but there is a case to say they could do with extra bodies in the midfield and extra ammunition in attack.
According to the Mirror, Manchester United have informed their defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic that he can leave Old Trafford when the January transfer window opens.
The report explains that two unnamed Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in the Serbian enforcer.
So should Newcastle join the race for the 31-year-old and consider a move?
Matic has only played seven first-team games at Manchester United this campaign and found himself frozen out of the senior picture.
But the left-footed star previously won three Premier League titles with Chelsea and was at one point one of the best defensive midfielders around.
He certainly shouldn’t be over the hill aged 31 and could be an interesting target for Newcastle.
Matic would bring experience and top level know-how to the squad, while increasing competition alongside the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden, Sean Longstaff and Matt Longstaff.
