Should Marcelo Bielsa offer Jay-Roy Grot a Leeds reprieve after loan spell in Holland?

Leeds United fell narrowly short of promotion, missing out on the top-two automatic spots and then losing to Derby County in the play-offs.

Soon, Marcelo Bielsa will need to start his preparations for the new season. Leeds must pick themselves up and launch another promotion campaign next season.

Bielsa has decisions to make on a number of players. This includes Jay-Roy Grot, who was loaned out last summer. He has spent the year in the Netherlands, picking up experience.

Leeds signed Grot from NEC Nijmegen in summer 2017. But in his first season in England, he struggled to break into the team on a regular basis.

After scoring one goal in 22 outings, Grot returned to the Eredivisie with VVV Venlo. His season in Holland was mixed with six goals and three assists in 34 games.

This is not a tally which will force Bielsa to immediately integrate him into his Leeds team. But it is a respectable tally for a youngster.

And with two years still remaining on his Leeds contract, the Netherlands U21 international might be given a reprieve next season.

The 21-year-old is still young and he could come good for Leeds. But he needs to step up his performances if he wants to be a part of a promotion-challenging squad next season.

Bielsa’s best option is to run the rule over Grot in pre-season. He could play a part in the squad next season but Bielsa might feel he needs another loan spell away from Elland Road.
