Should Manchester United sign £15million-rated Celtic wonder-kid Kieran Tierney?

Celtic youngster Kieran Tierney could make a move to Old Trafford and Manchester United this summer with a £15 million move being reported by the Mirror.

Jose Mourinho is said to be a huge admirer of the left-back, who he sees as a potential replacement to Luke Shaw, who had a poor first season under the Portuguese manager. Meanwhile, Italian defender Matteo Darmian looks set for a return to Italy, and perhaps as a part of a deal for Inter winger Ivan Perisic, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

If Darmian was to leave, United’s squad would be a little short at the left-back spot and Tierney could be the man to fill that void. The Scotsman had a breakthrough season under manager Brendan Rogers making 24 appearances in the Scottish Premier League and becoming an important part of the Celtic squad.

At £15 million, the 20-year-old represents a steal in the current market. At such a young age, Tierney has fantastic potential and he could become another player to harbour this potential at United, as many youngsters have done in the past.

The full-back is unlikely to slot right into the United starting XI, however, and he still has much to develop and improve upon within his game. Yet, Tierney could become an effective understudy and rotation player to someone like Shaw.

Of course, the Red Devils have the option to sign the player and then send him out on loan to a fellow Premiership or Championship club, or perhaps a return to Celtic. Here, the 20-year-old is continuing to gain experience and United can closely monitor his development before his transition to the first team.

Still, there is always a risk with such a transfer. Many youngsters at United have developed into superb players but there are also plenty of cases where they have become complete flops.

Tierney is still very young and his huge amount of potential could go unfulfilled at United, should the player be unable to get game time.

At £15 million, however, for a huge club like Manchester United, the deal represents minimal risk for what could be potentially a huge reward. Tierney, if he was to develop into what’s expected of him, may become the Red Devils’ starting left-back for a lengthy period.
