Should Manchester United move for Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic or Tottenham’s Eric Dier to boost their midfield?

With Manchester United clearly prepared to spend big this summer, The Guardian say that they could turn to Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier if a move for Nemanja Matic collapses.

The Chelsea midfielder had been strongly linked to a £40 million move to Old Trafford, but with the Red Devils beating the Blues to Romelu Lukaku’s signature, the deal could be in doubt.

That could lead to a move for Dier, but which of the two midfielders would be a better signing?

Nemanja Matic – Chelsea

Matic blows Dier out of the water in one key aspect, which is experience at the very highest level. That is something that Mourinho has looked for in the majority of his signings, with Eric Bailly and, potentially soon, Romelu Lukaku the only players without substantial Champions League experience.

Signing Matic would also be a hugely important transfer symbolically. A regular first team player for the champions last season, Matic’s move to Old Trafford would be a statement of intent.

It could also be a viable deal. Given Tiemoue Bakayoko’s imminent arrival in west London and the fact that Matic is going into the final year of his contract, the club may be forced to sell their central midfielder if the price is right.

Eric Dier – Tottenham

The most obvious advantage for Dier is that he is young and will only improve. Whilst not a key factor in many of Mourinho’s transfer dealings, the offer of a young England international over a Serbian who is close to being past his peak should be too much to resist.

Dier also boasts the ability to play in central defence if required, something that will appeal to Mourinho given his doubts over the ability of the likes of Chris Smalling.

Having lost his place as first choice holding midfielder, a deal could possibly be achievable if United are prepared to fork out a huge sum. Daniel Levy would not make that easy, but United have shown that they have huge power in the transfer market.

Verdict – Eric Dier

He may cost more, but Dier would be a much sounder long term investment than Matic.
