Should Liverpool or Spurs be Mario Gotze’s preferred destination?

The transfer saga of the summer looks set to be the man who two years ago was scoring the World Cup winning goal for his nation. Now spending most of his time sat on the bench at the Allianz Arena, Mario Götze is available after Bayern Munich reportedly told him that he would not be included in their 25-man Champions League squad should he decide to remain in Munich.

With Bayern desperate to get rid to cut their wage bill, Götze has been linked with a move back to Dortmund under new boss Thomas Tuchel, but has also been reported to be considering moves to Tottenham and Liverpool. With the Premier League seeming an increasingly likely destination for the 24-year-old, which of these two clubs would be the better option?

Based on last season’s performances, it is hard to claim that there is any debate. Tottenham finished third, despite being higher in the table for much of the season, with an exciting side playing attacking football and full of young talents. Meanwhile, Liverpool improved under Jurgen Klopp but still finished in a position which means that they will not be able to offer Götze European football this season as they attempt to lure him to the club.

Liverpool has the obvious attraction of allowing Mario Götze to reunite with former boss Jurgen Klopp, with whom he enjoyed a great relationship. That being said, rumours claim that he has already turned down a move to Anfield once this summer, so the influence of Klopp must be a questionable one. For Götze himself, if the most important factor is the personal level, then the chance to move to Dortmund and return to a stadium where he was previously considered a hero and he can play alongside his friend Marco Reus, would likely provide an option just as attractive as working with Klopp.

For both sides, it is hard to see where Götze would fit into the side. At Liverpool, there is plenty of competition in similar positions to Götze, with the recently signed Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana all more than capable of playing centrally as attacking midfielders. At Tottenham, whilst the options are not as numerous, they are there, with the excellent Christian Eriksen excelling in that role with Dele Alli also playing there at times last season.

It seems that the decision will largely depend on what kind of challenge it is that Mario Götze is looking for. If he wants immediate titles, then a Borussia Dortmund return may be the best option. Instead, if he yearns to help a side grow and compete for titles in a side which continues to improve every year, then Tottenham will be first choice. Or, if his quest is to be at the heart of a new project which sees one of the world’s best coaches building his own side to fight for titles, then Liverpool would be an irresistible option.

If rumours are to be believed, then the financial offering will be the main influence. In this aspect, it is hard to see who can offer the better package. Liverpool and Tottenham would undoubtedly have the edge over Dortmund thanks to the latest TV money deals, but may be reluctant to make him one of their top earners.

With several incomings and, as yet, few major outgoings at Anfield, there may not be large funds bailable to offer, and this is after he has already turned down a reported £150,000 a week offer from the club, although before he was forced out of the German champions. Tottenham are the most likely to be able to match the playmaker’s demands, but with a young squad of comparatively low earners, paying Gotze such a substantial wage could do more harm than good.

Whatever happens, it is clear that Gotze has at least three attractive options to choose from this summer with the opportunity to work with three of the most exciting managers in European football. A new challenge could do the youngster the world of good, after a rapid rise to prominence, he has since stagnated under Pep Guardiola and is unwanted by Carlo Ancelotti. The opportunity to feel wanted and be at the heart of a young team fighting for titles is what Gotze needs, the only question mark remains which he will choose.
