Should Liverpool have tied down Sturridge with his contract expiring this summer?

Daniel Sturridge’s Liverpool contract expires this summer and that means he is free to talk to suitors now that the January transfer window is open.

There was a point earlier on in the season when the Englishman was hotly tipped to sign a new deal at Anfield, but Jurgen Klopp appears to have gone cold on the idea as there have been no new developments on that front.

The German is obviously facing the prospect of losing Sturridge for nothing if his contract standoff remains unresolved, so should securing Sturridge’s future be a priority?

Back when Sturridge’s stunning goal secured a crucial 1-1 draw at Chelsea, it seemed as if he had established himself as the ideal impact player for Liverpool.

But since then, Xherdan Shaqiri has taken over the mantle as the Reds’ gamechanger from the bench and Divock Origi’s Merseyside derby winning goal has provided additional competition in the striking stakes.

Sturridge’s fitness is still a concern, but the long and short of the situation is that Liverpool do not have anyone who can debutise for Roberto Firmino as effectively as him.

On top of that, losing him for nothing would not be good business sense, so signing a new deal works best for all parties.
