Should Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio move to Chelsea or Manchester United?

TuttoMercatoWeb claim that Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United are preparing to do battle over Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio after the Italian has grown frustrated in Turin with the lack of game-time he is getting since recovering from a serious knee injury. Now seemingly sidelined from many of the club’s biggest games, Marchisio may consider a move out of Italy and away from Juventus for the first time since a loan spell at Empoli in the 2007/2008 season.

Why Chelsea?

Having played a key role under Antonio Conte for the Italian national team before his injury, Marchisio could be keen to reunite with the ma who he worked alongside for both Juventus and Italy at the peak of his career. Good on the ball but not afraid to do the hard work too, he would provide the kind of mobility that Nemanja Matic offers which has worked so well alongside N’Golo Kante at Stamford Bridge and which Cesc Fabregas has struggled with at times.

Why United?

The opportunity to join United and Jose Mourinho could be an attraction alone, but he would also have the chance to re-join his former team-mate Paul Pogba in midfield. Whilst the Frenchman’s first season has been underwhelming at best, with the disciplined Marchisio alongside him in midfield he could be afforded more freedom to roam forward. Marchisio could also represent a replacement for the ageing Michael Carrick as a hard working, tough tackling midfielder who is good on the ball.

At 31-years-old, his age does not seem to be an obstacle for either side who have shown no sign of being deterred from signing older players in the past few years, with United signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Chelsea thought to be monitoring a number of players currently at their peak or beyond it.
