Wojciech Szczesny
At 26 years old, Wojciech Szczesny is at the perfect age for a goalkeeper, and has benefitted from an uninterrupted season in goal at Roma in Serie A. This experience will have been beneficial for training the Pole to maintain his concentration throughout the ninety minutes and from week to week, as this has long been considered his greatest weakness. With the hugely experienced Morgan De Sanctis unable to force Szczesny out of the line-up, he must have impressed.
The ‘keeper is still on Arsenal’s books after spending a season on loan in the Italian capital, and it seems as though his intention is to return to the Emirates and begin an assault on the number one jersey. However, success in this endeavour is unlikely to say the least, as Petr Cech has been almost faultless for most of the season, David Ospina has been a fine deputy when Cech has been unavailable, and even third-choice Emiliano Martinez has not looked out of place.
The goalkeeping position is one of concern for Crystal Palace, that is for sure. Julian Speroni may be a club legend but is rapidly approaching the end of his career. Wayne Hennessey has hardly been faultless in the last few months, even causing Alan Pardew to resort to drawing attention to his individual errors, a tactic rarely employed by managers. It is clear that a number one of a higher standard is both desired and required for Palace to push on to the next level.
Such has been the form of Wojciech Szczesny this year, that The Eagles may face a battle with Roma for his services, as the Polish international shot-stopper has certainly endeared himself with the Italian fans. Should they be able to acquire his signature however, it would be a fine coup to pull off.
