The Sun claim that Chelsea’s backroom team are at odds over which striker to sign this summer with Antonio Conte’s team thought to be split over whether to spend £70 million to secure the services of Romelu Lukaku or Alvaro Morata. Both are likely to be available for the right price this summer and could head to Stamford Bridge, but it may be a tough call for the Conte to make as he looks to take his team to the next level.
Why Romelu Lukaku?
Prolific ever since he left Chelsea and proven in the Premier League with Everton, Lukaku seems the perfect candidate. Strong and tough in the challenge whilst powerful in the air, he would provide the kind of fight that could be missing if Diego Costa leaves the club in the summer transfer window. The 23-year-old has now broken the 20 goal barrier for three seasons in a row and has developed a reputation as one of the most threatening strikers in England.
Why Alvaro Morata?
Alvaro Morata may be less prolific with just 15 goals in his past two seasons and 13 so far this campaign at Real Madrid, though he has made most of his appearances from the bench. The Spaniard has the added bonus of having worked under Antonio Conte before though, and would slot into the side comfortably with his pace and poachers instinct likely to be the better option to partner Diego Costa with his movement capitalising on the spaces created by his international team-mate.
It seems likely that the decision could be swayed by the future of Diego Costa, but Romelu Lukaku certainly seems to represent the lower risk option, which could be important given the huge cost of what is likely to be the club’s marquee signing.
