Jack Marriott was a wanted man in the summer transfer window.
After hitting 33 goals for Peterborough United, he was destined to make the step up from League One to the Championship.
Aston Villa were among those in the hunt for the lively striker’s services. But due to financial difficulties this summer, they had to drop their interest in Marriott.
Instead, Derby County won the race for Marriott and he had a slow start to life at Pride Park.
The 24-year-old failed to find the net in his first six appearances for the Rams, perhaps indicating that he was struggling with the step up.
But Marriott is well and truly flying now. In his last eight games, he has scored five goals. And that includes strikes against Manchester United and Chelsea in the EFL Cup.
The ex-Ipswich Town man is renowned for his finishing ability and he is really demonstrating that for Derby now.
With four goals in his last five matches, should Aston Villa be regretting missing out on the in-form hit man?
Well, Marriott would definitely have given Aston Villa another dimension. And he would have been a good upgrade on Scott Hogan.
But if Jonathan Kodjia and Tammy Abraham can hit their best form, then there is no reason why Aston Villa’s strike force can rival Marriott in the golden boot chase.
