Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is settling into his new role now and he will be constantly running the rule over his squad ahead of the January transfer window.
In the new year, Smith has the chance to chop and change his squad.
Certain players could be heading for the exit door, while Smith will be keen to put his own personal stamp on the squad by bringing in some new signings.
One area that he may look to upgrade on is left-back. Neil Taylor has been recalled under Smith and has stepped up to the challenge quite well.
But with the Welshman suffering an injury, Smith might use this opportunity to fix that area in January.
Southampton defender Matt Targett would be an ideal signing for the Villans, either on loan or permanently.
The 23-year-old was linked with a move to Villa Park in the summer after playing a hand in preventing Aston Villa’s promotion.
For the second half of last season, Targett was on loan at Fulham, guiding them to the play-off final, where they beat Aston Villa.
Now, the former England under-21 international could join Aston Villa’s promotion push.
The attack-minded left-back has only played 72 minutes of Premier League football this season but has provided an assist for struggling Southampton.
But with Ryan Bertrand ahead of him in the pecking order, Aston Villa should be lining up a January move to hand the talented defender a lifeline.
