Benedikt Howedes
A World Cup winner with Germany and captain of Schalke, Benedikt Howedes is the commanding leader Arsenal could do with in the back four. He played every single minute in the Germany World Cup winning team and has a wealth of experience in the Bundesliga.
Making over 200 appearances for Schalke, Howedes has been a late bloomer but is now regarded as one of Germany’s most reliable stalwarts at the back. Injury has dented this season for him but he is strong, agile and controlling, a seemingly suitable partner for Laurent Koscielny. The Frenchman has the attributes of a world class defender, but isn’t a leader. Howedes can be just that for Arsenal.
In my opinion, he is a level up or two from Per Mertersacker and could also help guide Gabriel who is a capable defender but is rash and lacks experience at the highest level.
Arsenal have a world class ‘keeper in Petr Cech, and adding Howedes would not only assure Cech that he has a presence to do the talking in front of him, but adds solidarity too. This means that there is less pressure on him to come and tidy up for his defenders. To be honest, this signing seems like a no-brainer.
