Granit Xhaka

Arsenal have needed a dominating central midfielder for years, so when Francis Coquelin emerged in one of the best Arsenal away performances for years at the Etihad last season in a 2-0 win, they thought they had found the answer.  However, as usual at Arsenal, injuries have hindered the Frenchman and his lack of experience has caught up with him over a run of games with some rash decisions and poor positioning.

Xhaka is only 23-years-old, but is an integral part of the Swiss national side and a constant in the Borussia Monchengladbach team since his arrival in 2012.  Composed on the ball with a gifted left foot, he also asserts himself in the centre of the pitch.  He was in the Bundesliga team of the season last year as they made the Champions League with a third-placed finish.

His stats are similar to Coquelin with both playing around 25 league games, but Xhaka is much more of an aerial presence at 6 ft 1 in.  Xhaka is also much more comfortable on the ball and can bring the ball from back to front, something key to Arsenal’s play.  He is a ready-made Arsenal man and worth the supposed £35 million fee.
