Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that Joel Ward had signed a new contract at Selhurst Park.

What’s the story?

Well, Ward was one of many to find himself out of contract this summer, along with the likes of Scott Dann, Gary Cahill and Christian Benteke.

Only Benteke had signed a renewal before the Eagles announced Ward’s deal yesterday, and it’s great to see him extend his time in SE25.

The right-back joined Crystal Palace from Portsmouth in 2012 for just £400,000, and he has gone on to become a cult hero at Selhurst Park.

In total, the 31-year-old has made 273 appearances for the south Londoners, and played a big part in the 2012/13 promotion campaign.

Supporters will never forget his last-gasp header off the line against Watford in the Play-Off final.

More than just sentimental

This contract renewal is more than just sentimental – Ward is still a fine professional, who rarely lets the Eagles down.

With Nathan Ferguson still in rehabilitation, and Nathaniel Clyne yet to sign a renewal of his own, it was important to get Ward signed up.

Additionally, with Patrick Vieira adding plenty of youth to his ranks this pre-season, it’s important to have a senior figure like Ward around.

The Crystal Palace No.2’s experience will be invaluable as Vieira looks to freshen up the squad.
