Arsenal have made progress under Mikel Arteta but Shkordan Mustafi provided a glimpse of the era they are trying to leave behind at Stamford Bridge last night.
He showed a severe lack of composure with a backpass which led to the moment where David Luiz was sent off on his first return to his old club for fouling Tammy Abraham.
The spirit and fight shown to come back to 2-2 with ten men thereafter was fantastic and exactly what Arteta would be looking for.
But Mustafi took to Instagram after the match to apologise to Luiz for that moment as well as hail his team-mates for their comeback.
TBR’s View – Perhaps even Xhaka would be better in defence than Mustafi
When Luiz was sent off, Granit Xhaka moved to central defence and excelled alongside Mustafi.
That was two players who have been hammered by the fans digging in to help earn a draw which underlined the spirit Arteta has already brought.
But Mustafi simply does not have the composure to be trusted to play at the back without making mistakes.
Xhaka showed he could genuinely be a better option, but eventually they will both likely need to be moved on to allow Arteta to progress the squad from the current era of stagnation.
