Isaac Hayden is being targeted by some Championship clubs as discussion surrounding his Newcastle United future continues.
The Daily Mail reports that Hayden is keen on leaving Newcastle with West Bromwich Albion interested in the midfielder.
And according to The Mirror, Aston Villa are also in the hunt for Hayden this month.
The 23-year-old is unsettled at Newcastle and appears to be surplus to requirements after featuring just nine times this season.
However, he has played the last four games, either to put him in the shop window or because Rafa Benitez has reiterated that he has faith in the youngster.
But Newcastle cannot afford to lose Hayden this month because central midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is injured.
Shelvey’s recurring thigh injury is concerning Newcastle, who have sent him to Barcelona to see a specialist, according to The Daily Mail.
Newcastle fear that Shelvey could miss more games between now and the end of the season.
And if they are missing the 26-year-old in central midfield, Benitez needs Hayden there to add depth.
Unless Newcastle sign a new central midfielder – which looks unlikely until a takeover is completed – then Benitez must resist the urge to sell Hayden.
The former Arsenal player might be given more opportunities at St James’ Park with Shelvey potentially missing a chunk of the season.
