Sheffield United star says it would be difficult to reject Liverpool move

Sheffield United colossus Jack O’Connell has told Sky Sports that he is happy at Bramall Lane, but would find it very difficult to turn down a move to Liverpool – if the Reds ever came calling.

O’Connell, 25, has recently signed a new contract with the Blades which will see him remain at the club until the summer of 2023, unless any interested parties look to buy him.

The centre-back was exceptional for Chris Wilder’s men in the Championship last season, playing in 41 of the club’s 46 league games as they eventually finished in second place behind leaders Norwich City.

Ahead of his first foray into Premier League football, Liverpool-born O’Connell was asked about his future and a potential move to Anfield – and O’Connell responded as saying it would be hard to turn down Anfield.

“Obviously I’ve just signed a new contract, so I’m happy with Sheffield United,” O’Connell said. “I haven’t thought about leaving or nothing like that. But my dream, and my family’s dream, is to play for Liverpool.

“If they ever come knocking, which is very unlikely, it would be hard to turn down.”

TBR’s view

Liverpool could do with another centre-back this summer, as Dejan Lovren continues to be linked with a £25million move to AC Milan. Joel Matip has also been pretty vague when asked about his future.

However, the chances that Jurgen Klopp will identify O’Connell as an option is unlikely, given that he has never played in the Premier League. His ability on the ball and pace at the back would come into question.

A couple of decent years in the Premier League could tempt Klopp, though. Indeed, his desire to play for the Reds could sway Liverpool in years to come if O’Connell does show he is able to cope with the quality of the top tier.
