Sheffield United should resurrect interest in Jon Obi Mikel after Trabzonspor exit

After being previously linked with a move to Sheffield United, the Blades could well use the current world football situation to land Jon Obi Mikel.

The former Chelsea man has been playing his football in Turkey with Trabzonspor. However, he was linked with a move to Bramall Lane prior to completing that move.

Clearly, United never quite convinced Mikel to make the jump to Sheffield. Instead, the Nigerian made the move over to Turkey for more money.

However, with Mikel now leaving the Turkish side amid panic over the covid-19 pandemic, the Blades might well look to revisit their past interest.

Despite the signing of Sander Berge in the January window, the Blades are still looking to improve.

And while, on paper, Mikel might not fit the profile of young and up and coming players like United have signed already, he does possess a winning mentality and plenty of experience.

Perfect squad player

A player like Jon Obi Mikel will be one of those players who goes down as unappreciated in world football.

He played countless times for Chelsea and was always picked for big games. Mikel played over 200 Premier League games for Chelsea. Despite this, he was never really one who the fans picked out as a standout player.

But, Mikel won the lot with Chelsea. Two Premier League titles, a Champions League, Europa League, four FA Cups, and two League Cups, proving he is nothing but a winner.

And it’s that winning mentality and European experience that could help Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United.

Remarkably, the Blades are looking likely to seal to a European place. None of their current squad will have experienced that level of football barring the aforementioned Sander Berge.

It goes without saying, then, that experience might be needed. And what better time to snap someone up on a free with the quality and knowhow of Mikel, than now.
