Sheffield United fans react to Everton links with John Egan

Everton may have to be prepared to break the bank if they want to sign John Egan, with many Sheffield United fans on Twitter insisting that the centre-back is priceless.

The Sun on Sunday (17/11; page 67) reported over the weekend that the Toffees want Egan in January. It was suggested that scouts are being sent to watch the 27-year-old play for Republic of Ireland against Denmark on Monday.

Marco Silva certainly needs to bolster his defensive options. Everton are looking incredibly light at the heart of the back four after failing to sign a centre-back in the summer.

But it appears that signing Egan will not be an easy task. The Sun on Sunday (17/11; page 67) reported at the weekend that the Blades were set to demand a fortune for the former Brentford man.

And it is clear that the supporters have no interest in seeing the club cash in on the defender. Egan has been outstanding since arriving at Bramall Lane, and has played a key role in helping Chris Wilder’s side push up to fifth in the Premier League. Only Leicester City have conceded fewer goals.

Plenty of United fans have dismissed the idea that Egan could leave. They do not believe that he would want to move to Everton with the Toffees 10 places lower.

And they have also suggested that the Blades should show no interest in selling Egan unless a ridiculous offer comes in. The smallest figure suggested was £40 million, while one fan insisted that £70 million should be the club’s asking price.

But many have simply stated that nothing that Everton offer should be good enough.
