Sheffield United have been motoring along very well indeed in the Championship so far and went into FA Cup third round weekend just two points off the automatic promotion spots in third place in the second tier.

A home tie against National League side Barnet should not have provided any real issues, even with Chris Wilder deciding to make changes, but that proved not to be the case.

The Bees are 15th in the fifth tier – albeit with four games in hand on the team above them – but if the Blades have aspirations of reaching the top flight again, then even their second string should be able to see off a team three leagues below them.

It wasn’t to be as a lacklustre performance was punished by a first half penalty by former Tottenham frontman Shaquile Coulthirst, after Richard Stearman scythed down Ephron Mason-Clark.

One of the reserves who was handed a chance centre stage was defender Kieron Freeman, but in the eyes of the Blades faithful, he failed to seize his opportunity.
