Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has told Sky Sports that he tried to sign Wolves captain Conor Coady back in 2017.

The Blades face off against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side tomorrow in a big top-flight fixture.

If United were to win tomorrow they would go within a point of Wolves and would once again dare to dream about Europe.

Following promotion to the Championship, Wilder was keen to take Coady to Bramall Lane as part of a defensive shake-up.

The Liverpool-born performer is an integral part of Santo’s plans and has made 228 appearances for Wolves.

Wilder knows his team will be in for a tough test tomorrow with Coady epitomising what Wolves are all about.

He told Sky Sports: “They are well led by their skipper, someone who I really admire and tried to bring to Bramall Lane.

“We tried to get him at the time Nuno landed and we were hoping he would try to sign a Portuguese centre-half, as they are the players who he knows well.

“But the boy from Liverpool, he carries himself so well and is a great captain.”

Coady did spend some time on loan at the Blades back during the 2013/14 campaign but didn’t earn a permanent deal.

The fact that Wilder wanted to sign him certainly makes sense. Coady is exactly the sort of player that would slot seamlessly into the Sheffield United side.

He is solid defensively but not only that he is determined and boast the heart of a lion.

Coady only cost £2 million and he would have proved a steal for the Blades.

Back in 2019, The Telegraph reported that the skipper now earns £50,000-a-week at Molineux, with Santo offering him a new deal to reflect his importance to the team.
