Shearer says William Saliba is exactly what Arsenal needed after debut
Alan Shearer has told the Premier League website that William Saliba is exactly what Arsenal need, while he also named Aaron Ramsdale in his Team of the Week.
Mikel Arteta’s men got their campaign off to a really promising start on Friday night. The Gunners beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in their opening game.
Selhurst Park has not always been the happiest hunting ground for Arsenal. But they were outstanding in the opening stages. And, perhaps more importantly, they dug in to see out the game when Palace applied pressure.
And no player was arguably more impressive than Saliba. The Frenchman was making his debut for the Gunners in the game. And he showed exactly why the Arsenal fans have been so excited about his potential ever since his arrival.
Gary Neville compared Saliba with a young Rio Ferdinand. And Shearer seemed to be just as impressed. Meanwhile, he also included Ramsdale in his Team of the Week.
“A great debut performance and a dominating presence. Exactly what Arsenal needed at the back,” he told the Premier League website, when discussing Saliba.
“He made big saves at important times, denying Odsonne Edouard and Eberechi Eze with terrific stops,” he added on Ramsdale.
Saliba exactly what Arsenal needed
There is a lot to like about Arsenal this season. Their transfer strategy over the last 12 months has been a major success. And they have built on their ranks again this summer.
They now have a much more impressive squad. And the fact that they now have Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Ben White competing for the centre-back spots is extremely positive.
It is going to be fascinating how the battle between the three unfolds. The early signs suggest that Gabriel is going to be the mainstay of the backline.
But there will be more than enough opportunities for Saliba and White to stake a claim. Saliba is definitely off to a brilliant start.
