Shearer has praised Ben Davies after Tottenham draw at Liverpool
Alan Shearer has praised Ben Davies following Tottenham Hotspur’s draw with Liverpool on Saturday, telling Match of the Day that the block from Mohamed Salah was magnificent.
Spurs picked up a decent point at Anfield this weekend. Of course, they need to keep winning as the battle for fourth spot in the Premier League goes down to the wire. But there is no shame from coming away from Merseyside with a draw.
Unsurprisingly, Liverpool spent the large majority of the game on the front foot, with Antonio Conte’s side looking most dangerous on the counter.
Some of the visitors’ defending was absolutely outstanding. Davies, in particular, gave everything to ensure that Tottenham took something from the game.
The Welshman made a couple of stunning blocks, including one to deny Salah. And Shearer suggested that he was taken aback by Davies’ performance, with the final word going to that block from the Liverpool talisman.
“They’ve obviously been working on what they’re doing. Five at the back when they had to defend, four and one, and even Kane at times was dropping deep. There was just no space at all for Liverpool. You can see they were getting frustrated, whether it was Sessegnon, whether it was Dier who was superb, Romero, Emerson Royal, Ben Davies who I thought was man of the match, there was just no way through,” he told Match of the Day.
“I mentioned Davies there, they were throwing their bodies on the line to get to that ball first. This is the first of a couple of superb blocks that he did and that sort of epitomised everything. This is magnificent.”

Ben Davies may face a fight to keep his place in the Tottenham side next season. Reports have claimed that Spurs will sign at least one new centre-back this summer. And his position is perhaps the one which looks least secure.
However, he is doing his best to leave Conte with food for thought. The Italian recently insisted that Davies was having a fantastic season.
And performances such as the one on Saturday will only help him prove that he deserves to keep his key role beyond this campaign.
