Pundit Alan Shearer has paid tribute to Liverpool midfielder Gigi Wijnaldum after an impressive campaign, as per the Premier League’s official website.
The Reds may not have won the Premier League title but the Holland international has had his best season in a Red shirt and was a crucial contributor to their run to the Champions League final.
Shearer said as part of the team of the season he named: “Mr Consistent, he’s been an 8/10 or better most weekends. His passing, energy and dynamism have helped Liverpool’s front three to thrive.”
And after a summer in which Jurgen Klopp strengthened his midfield to the tune of Fabinho and Naby Keita, that’s some achievement for the former Newcastle man.
Jurgen Klopp knew he had a job on his hands to make up ground on Manchester City this season and as much as the new signings would help, he also had to coach improvement out of his current squad.
Wijnaldum is a prime example of that this season, but credit must also go to the player for taking on the challenge of new positional rivals and pushing his game to the next level.
There’s one final push to be made, in the final of the Champions League on June 1, and Wijnaldum was as responsible as anyone for getting them there with his double off the bench against Barcelona.
