Mathys Tel is set to become Tottenham Hotspur’s fourth signing of the transfer window once he completes his loan move from Bayern Munich.
Ange Postecoglou convinced Tel to join Tottenham after the Frenchman initially decided that he wasn’t keen to swap Germany for N17.
Spurs had agreed a fee with Bayern a few days ago, only for the 19-year-old to edge closer to remaining in the Bundesliga.
However, Tel will now be a Tottenham player for the remainder of the season by all accounts, a significant win for Daniel Levy.
Jamie O’Hara was excited to see Tel at Spurs, the kind of player who can actually make a difference for Postecoglou immediately, even if he is as young as some of Tottenham’s recent long-term recruits.
Shay Given thinks Mathys Tel will need to convince Tottenham fans
That being said, Shay Given raised an interesting point about Tel when reflecting on his move on Sky Sports.
Given was asked about reports that the striker had recently rejected a move to Spurs, and he suggested that he may have some back tracking to do once he signs.

Given said: “It’s strange he’s said that [that he didn’t want to join Spurs], I mean his press conference in the next 24 hours will be interesting, he’ll have to back track a little bit and say I love Tottenham, I love the stadium and I love the fans perhaps.
“But we all want to see how good this player is, I haven’t seen enough of him to be honest to see what level he’s at, but it’s a big move for him and when Man United and the likes are interested, I think he’s a top player.”
Fair comments, but Spurs fans will just be happy to have Tel in north London regardless.
Mathys Tel might put Son Heung-min’s spot under threat
Immediately, most Spurs fans will imagine that Tel will start as Postecoglou’s number nine in the absence of Dominic Solanke.
Richarlison has never really shown any sort of consistency under Postecoglou, meaning it could be a relatively easy switch.
However, once Solanke returns, fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium might even see Tel replacing Son Heung-min on the left occasionally.
Son hasn’t been at his best this season, even if he is still contributing a lot in games.
But either way, it’s a positive problem for Spurs to have, and it bodes well that Harry Kane has praised Tel’s application in the past.
