Former Aston Villa midfielder Shaun Maloney has been discussing a recent viewing of current Villa star John McGinn.

Martin O’Neill signed Maloney from former club Celtic back in 2007 but he spent just one season at Villa Park before heading back to Parkhead. He went on to play for Wigan Athletic, Chicago Fire, and Hull City but is now on the coaching staff for Roberto Martinez’s Belgium side.

The Red Devils take on Scotland this evening and will be facing off with McGinn. Speaking to The Herald, the Maloney highlighted a recent viewing of the Aston Villa midfielder.

“It has been nice to see James (Forrest) get some recognition for what he has achieved. He has been excellent for both club and country and has been exceptionally consistent, too.

“But it’s not all about James [Forrest]. Ryan Christie has gone on to another level over the last six months. A few weeks back I took in an Aston Villa game and thought that John McGinn really shone.”

TBR’s View

There is no doubt that McGinn has been proving himself worthy of Premier League football since Aston Villa’s promotion this summer.

Since his move to England, McGinn has shown he is a top talent and one who can hopefully continue to thrive at Villa Park. There was, after all, a reason why he found himself linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer.

Hopefully, he can fire Scotland to success against Belgium this evening and again highlight just why Aston Villa fans are so high on the midfielder. Maloney will hope his immensely talented Belgian side have what it takes to prevent that.
