Goalkeeper Shamal George has confirmed that he has left Liverpool on the day they were crowned Premier League champions with a heartfelt post on Twitter – and Reds fans have responded.
George, 22, joined Liverpool as a 9-year-old in 2007 and has remained on the books since. He has since been on loan three times and played for the Under-23 side on six occasions – keeping two clean sheets and conceding eight.
However, that form and his efforts on loan at Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United and Marine AFC have failed to see George hold on to his place at Liverpool. Indeed, he is quite some way down the goalkeeping pecking order.
Behind Alisson and Adrian, Andy Lonergan and Caoimhin Kelleher are also considered first-team goalkeepers. Loris Karius has returned, while Kamil Grabara is on loan. George has departed, and posted on Twitter.
George leaves without making a single senior appearance for the Reds, or even reaching the first-team bench. A career in the lower leagues is in the offing, given he has played at League Two level before.
Liverpool supporters and former Reds coach Michael Beale – who is working under Steven Gerrard at Rangers – responded to George’s Tweet, wishing the 6ft 3in star all the best for the future.
