It has been seven long years since Middlesbrough last rubbed shoulders with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United in the glittering Premier League.
Last year’s play-off final defeat to Norwich was the closest Boro have come to returning to the top flight since they were relegated from it in 2009.
Their response to last season’s disappointment has been impressive, and there is now rejuvenated hope that they could be competing in the Premier League come August.
Yet there seems to be a lot more riding on this particular campaign. Here are just a couple of reasons why they need to gain promotion this time around, or face the prospect of an eighth straight year in the Championship.
