Sessegnon will need to mirror Arsenal’s Nelson to save Tottenham career on loan – TBR View

Ryan Sessegnon completed a move to German side Hoffenheim on loan as he looks to get his career back on track after a difficult first season with Tottenham – but to save his time at Spurs, he will need to copy an Arsenal player.

Sessegnon, 20, joined Tottenham for £25million (BBC) last summer from Fulham – after having a hanf in 43 goals during 120 appearances for the west London side. But injury and a change in management limited Sessegnon to 12 games last term.

Spurs have since signed Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid which has pushed Sessegnon down the pecking order at left-back, while Gareth Bale’s return further reduces his near-zero chances of playing out wide for Spurs.

A loan move made sense, then. He made a surprising move to join Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga – rather than remaining in England. He will need to shine in Germany’s top tier to stand any chance of working his way into Jose Mourinho’s plans.

Back in 2018-19, Arsenal 21-year-old Reiss Nelson moved to Hoffenheim and immediately caught the eye – scoring seven goals in 29 appearances. Sessegnon’s England Under-21 teammate returned to Arsenal, and played 24 times last season.

Nelson massively improved his chances by shining in the blue of Hoffenheim and Sessegnong must take note. Similarly, if he is to break into Tottenham’s senior side – he will have to mirror the kind of impact Nelson had with Hoffenheim this season.

Failure to do so, and Sessegnon will be forced to wait on the sidelines for a prolonged period, and forget about having any kind of impact at Spurs in the coming years. It is make or break for Sessegnon.
