“Seriously”: Paul Merson has reacted to comments from Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho recently pointed out that his Tottenham side had passed the 100-goal mark this season, but pundit Paul Merson has responded negatively to his comments.

After beating Crystal Palace 4-1 last weekend in the Premier League, Mourinho highlighted the fact that his side have now scored over 100 goals in all competitions this campaign.

It’s something that he takes great pride from, as so often he’s criticised of being a defensive coach.

“If the stats I was given are correct — 100 goals scored in the season, which for a very defensive team, a very negative team, is not bad,” Mourinho said after last weekend’s Palace victory (Evening Standard).

The North London club followed it up in midweek with a 2-0 victory against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.

Merson though isn’t buying into the attacking firepower Spurs have, criticising the level of opposition they’ve faced at times.

“Jose Mourinho says scoring over 100 goals this season is not bad for a “negative team” like Tottenham,” Merson wrote in the Daily Star.

“But who’s he trying to kid? Look at the quality of the teams they’ve played. Seriously.

“They scored five against Marine. Four against Wycombe. And then eight against a bog-average Wolfsberger team in the Europa League. Don’t forget the seven they scored against mighty Maccabi Haifa in the qualifying round as well. That’s 24 of their goals already… Come on. Be honest.”

TBR’s View:

Spurs have stat-padded somewhat in the Europa League this season, but there can be no denying they’ve got one of the most exciting front trio around right now.

With Gareth Bale now rediscovering his form, they’ve got a mesmerising forward line of the Welshman alongside Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

If they can all stay fit and in-form, Spurs could have a really exciting end to the season.

Stats may have been exaggerated due to some of the opposition in the Europa League, but they are going deeper into that competition now and have got players who can deliver on any stage.
