Ollie Watkins has established himself as one of the very best players in the Premier League.
The England international has been exceptional for Aston Villa so far this season. He can’t stop scoring and his assist numbers stack up pretty well too.
Aston Villa signing Watkins for £28m back in 2020 has to be considered one of the best recent signings in Premier League history, but, in another world, Watkins could’ve signed for Tottenham.
Indeed, speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast ahead of this weekend’s game between Villa and Spurs, Alasdair Gold has shared just how close Watkins came to joining Tottenham, claiming that Spurs seriously looked at signing the striker a few years ago but they were put off by his pricetag and lack of experience.

Tottenham really looked at Ollie Watkins
Gold shared what he knows about the Aston Villa striker.
“They’re going to meet a striker on Sunday with the most ridiculous stats right now. Ollie Watkins is just crazy, 21 goals and 12 assists. I remember when Spurs seriously looked at him as well but they were put off by the pricetag because he was so untried and untested,” Gold said.
For the best
Not getting this move to Tottenham was probably the best thing to happen for Watkins.
The striker has improved so much since joining Aston Villa all those years ago, and he may not have been able to go on the same sort of journey at Spurs.
Indeed, if he’d joined Tottenham in 2020, he’d have spent three years sitting on the bench behind Harry Kane or shoved out on the wing to make way for the England captain.
At Villa he’s been able to play in his preferred number nine position, and now, Villa are actually ahead of Tottenham in the league as well.
Spurs may have been the more appealing club at the time, but joining Villa was the best move for Watkins in the long-term.
