Sergi Canos comments have extra resonance considering Garry Monk interest

Last week the Brentford midfielder Sergi Canos was discussing his feelings regarding the Championship. The Bees midfielder was speaking to the Guardian when he discussed the best playing teams in the Championship. He feels that Brentford, who drew 2-2 with Reading this weekend, are on par with Leeds when it comes to playing style in the second tier this summer.

The Spanish midfielder’s comments are certainly more interesting when you consider how close he once came to joining the Elland Road club.

Back in January 2017, Leeds were heavily linked with a move to bring the Spaniard to West Yorkshire. The midfield creator was a target for Garry Monk, who was a big fan of the former Liverpool trainee.

“A lot of people compare us with them [Barcelona]. Barcelona is Barcelona but Brentford is Brentford. The counter-pressing, moving the ball quick, wide players giving width.

“It is basically the same. We are all different but we try to play good football. It is great for us; I don’t think anyone – maybe Leeds – plays like we play.”

The deal was said to be worth a fee in the region of £2.5 million but Leeds just never got the deal done.

Canos has since gone on to be a star for the West London side and Leeds would certainly love to have him in their arsenal.

Canos would be a perfect option for Marcelo Bielsa. He would be a tremendous option for Bielsa, who could utilise his passing skills and energy in the centre of the Leeds midfield.

Leeds, however, have their very own midfielder in a similar role with Polish midfielder Mateusz Klich and the way he is playing, Leeds are happy with his performances.
