‘Sensational player’: Danny Murphy raves about 22-year-old Newcastle want to sign in World Cup semi-final

Danny Murphy has raved about reported Newcastle United target Azzedine Ounahi during ITV’s World Cup semi-final coverage of Morocco vs France last night. 

Newcastle are flying high at the moment and headed into the World Cup as one of the most in-form teams in the Premier League. 

Eddie Howe’s men haven’t tasted defeat since August and are mounting a surprise assault on the top four.

The Magpies currently sit third in the table and Howe will be eager to bolster his options next month as they aim to maintain their current position. 

90 Min reported yesterday that Newcastle are one of the many sides tracking Angers SCO midfielder Ounahi after his brilliant World Cup displays for Morocco. The 22-year-old suffered defeat against France in the semi-final last night but has really caught the eye in the middle of the park. 

The north African side put in another spirited display against Didier Deschamps’ men but goals from Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani sealed their fate. 

While Morocco’s surprise bid for World Cup glory came to an end last night, Ounahi really impressed ITV commentator Murphy during the game.

Murphy raves about Ounahi 

Ounhai put in another industrious performance from the middle of the park and looked like a real bright spark for Walid Regragui’s men. 

And Murphy was full of praise for the youngster as he continued to try to get Morocco back into the game around the hour mark. 

“I have to say, Ounahi’s performance again – sensational player,” Murphy told ITV. 

“22 years of age. I’m sure there’s a lot of admirers watching his performances in the last two or three games for Morocco.” 

The former Liverpool midfielder was then told by Steve Wilson that Ounahi has been linked with a move to a host of European clubs. 

“Yeah I can see why. Confidence. Skillful. Great energy, desire to get on the ball,” Murphy responded.

Ounahi was something of an unknown talent before the World Cup but he has certainly caught the attention of the biggest clubs now. 

90min reports that Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Juventus all hold an interest in the Moroccan star.

L’Equipe reports that Leicester City are planning to bid £40 million for Ounahi as the race for the midfielder looks set to heat up. 

Based on his World Cup displays, Ounahi would be an excellent addition to Newcastle’s midfield and would certainly add depth to the position.

Howe will be keen to get some fresh faces through the door in January and it looks like he will face a battle to sign Ounahi. But the Magpies are certainly in a position to compete with the biggest clubs for players now.
